Your Kindergartener & Reading

By the end of kindergarten, most children can recognize and write upper and lower case letters. Most kindergartners can read some words and simple books. Kindergartners learn that writing goes from left to right. Kindergartners can understand more than just the plot of a story

Encouraging Your Kindergartner

  • Let your child read the words and offer help only when it’s needed
  • Let your child “share” the reading with you
  • Keep reading sessions short
  • Encourage your child to track the print with a finger, pointing to each word as she/he says it.
  • Don’t limit reading to just books

Reading can be made a part of your childs life by encouraging them to read at any point in the day example: at the grocery store they can help find items on the grocery list, while in the car they can read the street signs as they go by. If you are out shopping they can help you read the isle names and clothing racks. Learning to read  should always be encouraged and nurtured by you. Be an example to your child and always remember to get appropriate age leveled reading for your you young one.

Here is a list of Kindergarten age appropriate books that will definitely help your young one grow in their reading.
